Dust Rising 2021

Date

January 2021

When There's Death, There's Paperwork is the name of this project that won the Dust-rising 2021 competition in Newcastle-under-Lyme by Lucinda Belas, Jenefer Steel, Kristyna Paulova, and Elise Gaunt. For this project, we were challenged to produce a seat exploring the arts during the pandemic.

The chair represents Death during the COVID-19 pandemic. We decided to use the vanitas art movement and incorporated the traditional idea of a vanitas painting with items that have more of a theatre association.

We felt that Death would need a chair to sit in to do their paperwork and would naturally be surrounded by the accoutrements of their work. His cloak is casually hung from the back of the chair with their scythe, paperwork is strewn on the floor, and the everyday 'unnerving' can be seen in the chair's armrests.
